The 1940s and 1950s: the founding of the publishing house
and its subsequent expansion

The Winfried-Werk GmbH publishing house was established in Augsburg in March 1948 by Josef Hall, who went on to become its director, and the Katholisches Männerwerk, Fulda. The publishing house published the Catholic magazine "Mann in der Zeit" with an initial circulation of 50,000 copies as well as a number of individual book titles.

In 1957, the circulation of "Mann in der Zeit" exceeded 500,000 copies for the very first time. Up until this point, the editorial team had been based in Fulda. However, it moved to new headquarters in Augsburg in 1958. Prior to the move, the "Domprobstei" building on the city’s Frauentorstraße was restored after suffering bomb damage and a new wing was added.
